Julie Winkel, renowned judge, trainer and clinician, will be teaching clinics in 11 states in 2020. Her clinic dates are confirmed, and she'll be traveling from coast-to-coast to teach for associations, private farms and other professionals.

"I'm passionate about teaching riders and horses, and each year I look forward to returning to see those whom I've taught and how they've improved, and to meeting new people who are striving to improve their riding and horsemanship skills," said Winkel.

Winkel, who believes strongly in stressing the basics, enjoys teaching all levels of riders and helping them to build their skills, from the ground up all the way to the Hunter Derby and Grand Prix show jumping rings.

"I usually start with the lowest group in height, and build up, and I'll do something different with each group," she said in describing her typical clinic schedule. "I like to spend half of each lesson on flatwork that pertains directly to what we're going to do over jumps, so the riders can master the basics on the flat and then use those tools with the exercises over fences."

Winkel believes participants get more out of clinics by signing up for the level they're most comfortable doing, then perfecting themselves and their horses in preparation to move up. "My suggestion is to be at the top of the lower group instead of the bottom of the higher group," she noted.

Winkel's schedule includes many clinics open to all, including auditors, so please contact the trainers and/or farms for space availability and more information.

"I think that it's really important to stress that the attitude about riding and competing should be, 'What can you do for your horse and not what can your horse do for you?' " said Winkel. "I think that at the end of the day that all we do should be for the good of the horse."
